Description:
The British Household Panel Survey (BHPS) began in 1991 and is a multi-purpose study. The BHPS data contains information on career trajectories between broad sectors, including the non-profit sector. The unique value of the BHPS resides in the fact that:
- it follows the same representative sample of individuals – the panel – over a period of years;
- it is household-based, interviewing every adult member of sampled households.
The BHPSsurveys up to 8,000 people in employment in any one wave and follows them over time (there are some boosts for particular surveys). It has been running for twenty years and has gone through an exhaustive process of testing and validation.
There are extensive questions about training and qualifications, and cross-sector comparisons are possible. It will be extended to cover 100,000 individuals in its new guise as “understanding society”.
